Thoracic Oncology Clinic

Dedicated to Developing the Most Effective Treatment Strategy in the Fight Against Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer in both men and women. In many cases, the disease spreads before patients are ever treated. Fortunately, Elkhart General Hospital developed the Thoracic Oncology Clinic, which is designed to decrease the time it takes from the first symptoms to the start of treatment.

While it’s completely normal for newly diagnosed lung cancer patients to meet with a variety of physicians from many different specialties, it’s also likely patients will need to schedule separate appointments, which can take days and sometimes weeks to plan. The Elkhart General Thoracic Oncology Clinic helps solve this problem by allowing patients who have been diagnosed with lung cancer to see a team of specialists including a thoracic surgeon in one office visit in order to begin treatment as quickly as possible.

Prior to your appointment, your diagnosis is evaluated by our team of specialists. This team works as a group to review lab results, scans, pathology reports and any other clinical information available on your condition. Together, our team will develop a treatment plan that is best for you.

The physicians then meet individually with you to review the plan. In a very short timeframe, and in one setting, you are able to receive a thorough consultation with each specialist, learn about the next steps and address any issues or concerns you may have. Follow up appointments are scheduled the same day so you can begin treatment right away. You will also receive peace of mind knowing the treatment plan is the product of a team effort, with contributions from every specialist who is involved in your care.

If you have not been diagnosed with lung cancer, but have a worrisome finding on a scan, our team of specialists can also review scans and tests to determine the best options recommended for
your care.

Components of a Typical Clinical Visit

  • Review of your family and medical history and current symptoms
  • Physical exam
  • Nutritional counseling by a Registered Dietitian
  • Individual meetings with each specialist involved in your care that include recommendations for further treatment
  • Subsequent lab and/or radiologic testing scheduled, if needed
  • Return visits scheduled

Benefits of the Thoracic Oncology Clinic

  • Your diagnosis is evaluated by our team of specialists in one room at one time in order to develop a treatment plan that is best for you.
  • Your initial visit involves individual meetings with our specialists, which provides you with answers and helps to relieve your anxiety about your treatment plan.
  • We are available for second opinions. If you have been diagnosed with lung cancer, you may wish to seek a second opinion. Sometimes a second opinion helps you feel more confident about your chosen treatment plan. The Clinic is available to provide a second opinion, regardless of where you received your diagnosis and where you decide to go for treatment.
