Randy's Story

For Randy Mohler, it wasn’t just what 450 pounds was doing to his body. It was also the weight of a $600-a-month co-pay bill.

"Diabetes was killing me," said 58-year-old bariatric surgery patient Randy Mohler. "And my obesity wasn’t doing our bank account any favors either. Before surgery I was taking 12 different medications – for the diabetes, for high blood pressure, for acid reflux. That was costing us about $600 a month just in co-pays. Plus I was running up other medical bills for treatment of things like varicose veins."

"My doctor made it clear that I had to do something serious about my weight and the damage it was causing, and he sent me to Dr. Knapp to talk options. (I’d already ruled out the "diet and exercise" option. Been there; done that ¬– over and over.) Dr. Knapp helped me realize it was time for surgery."

"Randy is the perfect example of why I call our practice the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute," said Bariatric Surgeon Eric Knapp, D.O. ‘Metabolic’ refers to all of the processes that are affected by obesity and the consequences that result. In Randy’s case, had he stayed on the path he was on, he was looking at possible amputations, blindness, and kidney failure, and a high risk of a heart attack or a stroke. It looks like his surgery has saved him from that."

Mohler has dropped 140 pounds from his high mark. "My goal is to get down to 220 and even the doctor has told me that’s an ambitious target. But no matter where I end up, I’m going to be a lot healthier and a lot happier. I don’t have the hurt of little kids pointing at me anymore. I’m off most of the meds. And ending each month several hundred dollars better off? That’s a valuable bonus."
