Radiologist to Discuss Mammograms at Farmers Market
January 20, 2010

ELKHART, IN – Elkhart General is offering a free public seminar titled “Mammography: A Local Opportunity to Live” on Friday, January 29 at 12:00pm in the Elkhart General Healthy Lifestyle Corner on the 2nd floor of the American Countryside Farmers Market in Elkhart.

Samir Patel, MD, Radiology Inc., will review the recent statement on mammography released by the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF). He will also confirm the benefits of an annual screening for mammography beginning at age 40, as recommended by the American Cancer Society. Lastly, he will discuss the following community statistics:

  • Adherence to annual screening mammography improves survival rate
  • Delay in mammography, greater than a one year interval, results in lower survival rates
  • Annual mammography for women aged 40-49 results in improved survival rates
  • Less than 50% of women diagnosed with breast cancer, greater than 40 years old, report having a mammogram the year before their cancer was diagnosed

No registration is required, but seating is limited. For more information, call Elkhart General Community Relations at (574) 523-3303 or visit www.egh.org.
