Neonatologists Join Elkhart General Medical Staff
November 5, 2009

ELKHART, IN – Elkhart General Hospital recently added five Neonatologists to the medical staff, bringing their clinical expertise to the Elkhart General Level IIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Neonatologists providing daily care at EGH include (from left to right) Vitaliy Soloveychik, M.D.; Basharat Buchh, M.D.; Olufemi Okanlami, M.D.; Mary T. Degeneffe, M.D. and Robert White, M.D.

The neonatology staff is supported by three Nurse Practitioners who are specially trained in neonatology. According to Dr. White, “Prior to our joining the medical staff many of these fragile babies would have been transferred to another facility. Now families can stay in their own community.”

Located in the Elkhart General Special Beginnings Maternity Center, the 8-bed NICU is Level IIB; which provides clinical services to newborn infants who are more than 32-weeks gestational age at birth, or who are recovering from a serious illness. Lead by a team of specialists, they provide care 24-hours a day, 7-days a week with the latest in technology. Over 1,700 babies are born at Elkhart General each year and the staff annually admits 170 babies to the NICU.
