Lilly Oncology On Canvas Art Exhibit Depicts Journey of Cancer Survivors at Elkhart General Hospital
February 19, 2010
ELKHART, IN – Lilly Oncology On Canvas, an international art exhibit honoring the physical and emotional journeys people face when confronted by a cancer diagnosis, will be on display at Elkhart General Hospital from February 22 – 26, 2010 in the Deli/Gift Shop Waiting Area. The unveiling will be held at 8:00am on Monday, February 22, 2010 and will include information about the exhibit and light refreshments. This free public exhibit will showcase 50 select pieces of art from the 2008 Lilly Oncology On Canvas competition.
"Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey" is an exhibition of original artwork by patients from around the world. Launched in 2004 by pharmaceutical maker Lilly Oncology, the project began as a way to honor the cancer journeys of women and to make a contribution to oncology that went beyond drug discovery and development to treating the whole patient.
As an artistic, competitive forum, it was designed to give those affected by cancer a chance to express the emotional side effects of the disease and, in doing so, help themselves and inspire others. In its five years, the biennial Lilly Oncology on Canvas international competition has grown to include works from both men and women affected by the disease, beginning with nearly 500 entries from 23 countries in 2004, increasing to 2,151 pieces of art from 43 countries today.
Anita Flohe, Elkhart General Cancer Experience Guide, notes that the exhibit is both moving and inspiring. "Art is such a wonderful way to express emotions, and participation by so many people from so many cultures, brings a truly international dimension to this exhibit," she said. "You can't help but admire their courage and creativity as they share their very personal stories in art."
