IOPO Honors Elkhart General Hospital
April 25, 2007

ELKHART, IN-In April 2007, the Department of Health and Human Services joined national leaders and practitioners from the Nation’s transplantation and hospital communities to launch the Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative.

The Collaborative is committed to spreading best practices to key hospitals throughout the country to achieve organ conversion rates of 75 percent or higher. The Indiana Organ Procurement Organization (IOPO) is the lead agency in Indiana to carry out the mission of the Breakthrough Collaborative.

At this year’s 2-day Best Practice Conference, IOPO presented for the first time the Donation Champion Award to Elkhart General Hospital as one of 15 Hospitals in Indiana who have met the standards set by the Department of Health and Human Services. The awards were based on 100% organ donor referrals, achieving a 75% or greater rate of actual transplants and a transplant rate average of 3.75 or greater, organs transplanted per donor.

IOPO was founded in 1987 as a nonprofit health service dedicated to serve the citizens of Indiana by providing a link between people awaiting a transplant and potential donors. IOPO is based in Indianapolis and has regional offices in Ft. Wayne and Evansville.
