Elkhart General Hosts "I Can Cope" Cancer Program

ELKHART, IN – Cancer patients and their families will have an opportunity to better understand and cope with the disease, thanks to the “I Can Cope” cancer education program. Guest speakers include doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, community representatives, and cancer survivors. In addition, videotapes, print materials, and class discussion provide up-to-date information for patients, family, and friends.

Sponsored by Elkhart General Regional Center for Cancer Services and the American Cancer Society, a series of four classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, March 4 in Auditorium B at Elkhart General Hospital.

The first class, “Learning about Cancer and Cancer Treatment – Understanding Feelings and Relationships,” will be held March 4. During this class, keynote speaker and board certified medical oncologist James Jin, MD, PhD will present “Chemotherapy and Cancer Treatment.”

During the March 11 program, “Benefits of Nutrition” is the topic. Keynote speaker, Michael Rotkis, MD, board certified surgeon, will also present “The Surgical Side of Cancer Treatment.”

Class topic “Keeping Well in Mind and Body” will be held on March 18. Keynote speaker and board certified radiation oncologist, Joel Cohen, MD, will present “Palliative Care Options.”

On March 25, “Discovering Resources and Celebrating Life” will be the class topic. Keynote speaker and board certified radiation oncologist, Brion Shin, MD, will present “Radiation Aspects of Cancer Treatment.”

There is no charge to attend the I Can Cope series. Registration is required by Monday, March 1 at 4:00pm. Dinner will be provided. For more information or to register, call Elkhart General Hospital at (574) 296-6553.
