Elkhart General Hosts "I Can Cope" Cancer Education Program

ELKHART, IN – Cancer patients and their families will have an opportunity to better understand and cope with the disease, thanks to the “I Can Cope” cancer education program. Guest speakers include doctors, nurses, health care professionals, community representatives, and cancer survivors. In addition, videotapes, print materials, and class discussion provide up-to-date information for patients, family, and friends.

Sponsored by Elkhart General Regional Center for Cancer Services and the American Cancer Society, four classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, September 3 in Auditorium B at Elkhart General Hospital.

The first class, “Learning about Cancer and Cancer Treatment – Understanding Feelings and Relationships,” will be held September 3. During this class, keynote speaker and board-certified oncologist James Jin, MD, PhD will present “Chemotherapy and Cancer Treatment.”

At the September 10 program, “Benefits of Nutrition” is the class topic. Keynote speaker, Michael Rotkis, MD, board-certified surgeon, will also present “The Surgical Side of Cancer Treatment.”

Class topic “Keeping Well in Mind and Body” will be held on September 17. Keynote speaker and board-certified radiation oncologist, Joel Cohen, MD will present “Palliative Care Options.”

On September 24, “Discovering Resources and Celebrating Life” will be the class topic. Keynote speaker and board-certified radiation oncologist, Joel Cohen, MD will present “Radiation Aspects of Cancer Treatment.”
