Elkhart General Hospital Emergency Medicine Medical Director, David E. Van Ryn, MD Selected as 2011 Outstanding Physician at Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend
September 19, 2011

Elkhart
, INDavid E. Van Ryn, MD, Elkhart General Hospital Emergency Medicine Medical Director, has been selected as the 2011 Outstanding Physician at the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend (IUSM-SB).

The annual award honors a physician who has worked closely with IUSM-SB students and whose work in community engagement and excellence in practice exemplifies the physician-teacher.

Van Ryn was selected by a committee of medical school administrators and local healthcare representatives.

“Dave’s commitment to the Medical School and its students has been essential to our transition from a two-year program to one that provides all four years of medical education,” said Dr. Rudy Navari, IUSM-SB assistant dean and director. “From the first discussions about offering a third- and fourth-year clinical education, Dave has ensured that our students would train at Elkhart General Hospital, and that their experience would be of the highest quality.”

Van Ryn said his commitment to IUSM-SB relates to his interest in educating the future physicians of this area. “I am convinced that the ability to bring high-quality physicians to South Bend and Elkhart is promoted largely by allowing medical school students to do as much of their training as possible in the area.”

Once IUSM-SB began third- and fourth-year education in 2008, Van Ryn began serving as a clerkship director, overseeing student training in the emergency department setting and enlisting other Elkhart doctors to become involved as physician-teachers.

Dr. Van Ryn is a graduate of Indiana University and the Indiana University School of Medicine. He has worked at Elkhart General Hospital for 28 years, where he has served as assistant director of medical education, and he also is on the Emergency Department staff of IU Health Goshen Hospital. In both Elkhart and Goshen, he has been involved in educating physicians, nurses, paramedics and emergency medical technicians in subjects ranging from Advanced Trauma Life Support to Dive Medicine.
