Elkhart General Hospital Cancer Program Earns Outstanding Achievement Award for Third Consecutive Survey
April 5, 2011

Elkhart, Ind. - The Elkhart General Hospital Regional Center for Cancer Services has been awarded the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award for excellence in cancer care.

Elkhart General is the only area hospital, and one of just 90 facilities nationwide, to earn this award along with the CoC’s three-year re-accreditation with commendation. Fewer than 20 percent of cancer programs in the United States attain this superior recognition.

“What makes this award particularly significant is the fact that Elkhart General has received recognition for three consecutive survey periods,” says Greg Losasso, Vice President of Operations. “This award is a testament to the efforts of our highly qualified physicians and staff to provide superior cancer care to our patients day-in and day-out.”

The Outstanding Achievement Award followed a rigorous evaluation process and review of performance, including an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor. During the evaluation, Elkhart General demonstrated a Commendation level of compliance with the most critical program features including clinical services, community outreach, research, quality improvement, cancer committee leadership and cancer data management.

“CoC approval is given only to those facilities that voluntarily commit to excellent cancer care and a rigorous review of their performance,” notes Cindie McPhie, Director of Oncology Services. “Receiving care at a CoC-approved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to the full spectrum of quality, comprehensive cancer care close to home.”

As part of the approval process, Elkhart General publishes a Cancer Program Annual Report for the public. A copy of the 2010 report can be found at www.egh.org or by calling the Marketing & Community Relations Department at (574) 523-3303.
