Elkhart General Hospital Breast Care Center Earns Highest Certification

ELKHART, IN – Elkhart General Hospital Breast Care Center has awarded the highest level of certification as a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence by the National Consortium of Breast Centers, Inc.

To achieve the highest level of certification the center must be measured in the top 25% of all breast centers across the nation. Only 17 hospitals nation-wide have this distinctive certification. Elkhart General Breast Center is the only Breast Center in the region to receive such a certificate.

The measures monitored are how quickly patients are able to return for any follow-up mammograms, the percentage of women called back for additional imaging, how quickly patients are able to have an outpatient needle core biopsy rather than having an open surgical biopsy requiring anesthesia. By doing these needle core biopsies, the Breast Center is able to save 80% of women surgery. Those that are diagnosed with cancer are saved from having multiple surgeries.
