Medically Managed Weight Loss Program

At the Elkhart General Hospital Bariatric & Metabolic Institute, our program is focused on addressing obesity with modern treatment strategies, research and education. Because losing weight is often not as simple as it sounds.

Medically Supervised Weight Loss

The Bariatric and Metabolic Institute (BMI) has three weight loss programs designed for individuals with a Body Mass Index over 30 or have health risks which could improve from weight loss. We also support individuals who have been unable to shed pounds on their own who would personally benefit from weight loss and a personal wellness plan.

A comprehensive initial physical and risk assessment is performed for each individual in our program as well as receiving a personal wellness plan. This includes medication adjustments to match your diet, weight loss and health improvements. Monthly clinic visits with the nurse practitioner assures physical safety as well as personal and emotional support.

Our unique wellness approach is backed up by additional training and certifications to assist you in meeting your weight loss goals. Participants will be weighed and a blood pressure check will be done weekly. In addition, classes on nutrition, exercise or behavior are provided at various times each week. We offer a comprehensive program with options to choose one of three diet plan pathways. Depending on your diet plan, you may choose from nutritious meal replacement shakes, puddings, soups and bars; or a custom meal plan can be designed for you.

Through our comprehensive Medically Managed Weight Loss Program, we offer three diet plan pathways — Ketosis (very low calorie diet), Outlook (low calorie diet) or 3BMI. We will help you choose the right plan that will be the most effective while keeping cost in mind.

Ketosis — a very low calorie diet (VLCD): low in carbohydrates and high in quality protein. Delivers natural and efficient fat burning while preserving lean body mass. Most people burn 2 to 5 pounds a week depending on their current muscle mass and consistency.

Outlook — a low calorie Diet (LCD): with more carbohydrate choices and high quality protein. Most people burn from ½ to 2 pounds a week depending on current muscle mass and activity. The Outlook Program is supervised by a Registered Dietitian (RD) who will personalize complete meal plans for you. You practice selecting, preparing and eating healthy meals the entire time you are shedding the pounds. This will make maintaining your weight loss easier.

3BMI—(3 mo. Being Motivated and Inspired): Get instructions on proper nutrition and exercise in our non-medically monitored weight loss program that lasts 12 weeks. If you’re not sure where to start, this is the program for you! You meet with a Registered Dietitian for personalized meal plans and you meet with a Personal Trainer to start an exercise routine. Each month we check on your progress, get your current weight and help keep you motivated to lose weight. This program starts January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.

 A Dedicated Team

We offer a comprehensive approach to weight loss, helping patients in their commitment to a healthier lifestyle.  An entire team of professionals, led by fellowship-trained, board certified surgeons, works to provide superior care for our patients.  The team is comprised of professionals from many disciplines: nurse practitioners, certified bariatric nurses, dietitians, personal trainers and behavioral health specialists.  This team works together to ensure the best possible result for each and every patient.

Using this multidisciplinary dynamic, the Institute offers an individualized program to meet each patient’s specific needs and goals. To ensure patient satisfaction and long-term success, the program includes extensive patient education, ongoing patient support groups, and long-term clinical follow-up.

Maintenance Programs

Support from The Bariatric and Metabolic Institute does not end at weight loss. Through our program, you will receive the support, motivation and encouragement you need to help you maintain the weight you have lost. Whether you lost weight using the medically managed programs or the surgical program, we have a program designed just for you.

S.T.A.R. — Steps to Avoid Regain is free to our weight loss participants and focuses on behavior and exercise. This program offers continual guidance to build on skills that were successful during weight loss, but explains the necessary behaviors to ensure long term maintenance of that weight loss.

What is the cost of the program?
The cost depends on what services are used each week, i.e. lab work, medical office visit, etc. Therefore, a detailed cost sheet is provided and explained at the seminars or the screening visits. Most insurance companies will cover the medical component, and we will provide information for you to use when speaking with your insurance provider. Self pay individuals should ask about the Elkhart General self pay discounts.
