About EGH
Meals on Wheels

If you are a homebound or senior citizen in the City of Elkhart, we may be able to help you with your nutritional needs.  Elkhart Meals on Wheels program, home-delivers one or two meals a day (at the same time in one drop), five days a week (excluding Holidays and inclement weather), to citizens that are unable to ensure adequate nutrition for themselves.  Some utilize our services while recovering from illnesses or surgery, while others need meals indefinitely to help them remain independent in their own homes.

Services Provided

Meal Plans

Noon Only Meal Plan:  Full Hot Meal (includes meat, vegetable, starch, salad, dessert and a beverage).  Cost for this meal plan is $4.00 per day, or $20.00 per week.

Double Meal Plan (Both):  Full Hot Meal as described above, plus a second meal consisting of a salad, sandwich, dessert and beverage.  Cost of the second meal plan is an additional $2.00 per day.  Meals are delivered to clients by 1:00p.m.

Meals on Wheels also provide daily social contact for our clients who might otherwise be alone.  It can potentially allow for earlier release from hospitals and long term care facilities and help in keeping elderly or disabled persons out of institutions altogether.  It can help older married couples remain together and give many people the opportunity to live in their own homes for longer periods of time. Because volunteers check on meal recipients every weekday, people who live alone can feel safe, knowing that someone would notice if anything were to happen to them.

Our History

In 1967, a group of women from the Elkhart County Medical Auxiliary, YWCA, Association of University Women, Tri Kappa Sorority, and Psi Ota Sorority formed the Elkhart Meals on Wheels program to help provide well-balanced meals to persons who were unable to cook for themselves.

Volunteer Information

Volunteers are needed to assist with kitchen duties as well as route drivers.  The kitchen volunteers work from 8:00a.m. until 11:00a.m.  The route driver volunteers pick up meals at approximately 11:00a.m. and it takes a maximum of one hour and a half to complete a route.  It takes over 60 people a week to cover this volunteer program for the community.  We are always in need of volunteers.  If you have some spare time once a week or even once a month and would like to help with this wonderful program, please call Jean Jones, Volunteer/Kitchen Coordinator at (574) 523-3399.  Volunteers must pass a background check, at no cost to them, in order to protect the safety of our clients.

All charitable contributions to Elkhart Meals on Wheels are tax deductible. Donations from the community make this program possible. The program is funded primarily through donations from clients, their families, local organizations and churches.
