If you are a homebound senior citizen in the City of Elkhart, or know someone who is, we want to help. Elkhart Meals on Wheels home-delivers two meals a day, five days a week (excluding holidays) to seniors who are unable to ensure adequate nutrition for themselves. Some utilize our service while recovering from illness or surgery, others need meals indefinitely to help them remain independent in their homes.
One meal plan: a full hot meal, including meat, vegetable, starch, salad, dessert, and beverage is delivered by 12:30pm. Cost is $4.00 per day or $20.00 per week. Two meal plan: includes above meal, plus a second meal consisting of salad, sandwich, dessert and beverage delivered at the same time. Cost is an additional $2.00 per day.
Meals on Wheels also provides daily social contact for seniors who would otherwise be alone. It can potentially allow for earlier release from hospitals and long term care facilities and help in keeping elderly and disabled persons out of institutions altogether. It can help older married couples remain together and give many people the opportunity to live in their own homes for longer periods of time. Because volunteers check on meal recipients every weekday, people who live alone can feel safe, knowing that someone would notice if anything were to happen to them.
In 1967, a group of women from the Elkhart County Medical Auxiliary, YWCA, Association of University Women, Tri Kappa Sorority, and Psi Ota Sorority formed the Elkhart Meals on Wheels program to help provide well-balanced meals to persons who were unable to cook for themselves.

Volunteers are needed in the Meals on Wheels office, kitchen and as route drivers. It takes 61 people each week to run the program. In the office, volunteers work from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The kitchen volunteers work from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The route driver volunteers pick up meals at 10:30 a.m. and take about an hour to complete the route. It takes over 60 people each week to run the program.
All charitable contributions to Elkhart Meals on Wheels are tax deductible. Donations from the community make this program possible. The program is funded primarily through donations from clients, their families, local organizations and churches.
