Cognition is defined as the act or process of knowing, including both awareness and judgment. This skill is necessary to actively and safely participate in every aspect of an individual’s daily life.
Injuries and illnesses such as head injury, stroke, brain tumor, or other neurological disorder can cause cognitive changes that limit an individual’s safety and independence.
Cognitive Retraining, provided by an Occupational Therapist, will help to identify impairments and implement a plan to return the individual to their maximum level of independence. Working with the individual and their family, the Occupational Therapist, will make recommendations for the appropriate level of independence and provide information on community resources available to maintain this level of independent living.
Cognitive Retraining seeks to improve or restore a person's skills in the areas of paying attention, remembering, organizing, reasoning, understanding, problem-solving, decision making, and higher level cognitive abilities.
