Lymphedema Therapy

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic swelling of any part of the body caused by a deficiency in the flow of lymph fluid from the area. This may be caused by:

  • Surgical removal of lymph nodes, such as with mastectomy or prostate surgery.
  • Congenital defects (individuals born with impaired or decreased numbers of lymph nodes).
  • Damage to any part of the lymphatic system following trauma, radiation or surgery.

What are the symptoms of Lymphedema?

Lymphedema begins as a soft, fluid-filled swelling anywhere on the body, but most frequently in the arms or legs. The affected area may also become inflamed. Eventually, the area may thicken, become fibrotic (hardened) and the skin may break down.

Patients may experience increased pain in the area, numbness or tingling, heaviness and/or diminished range of motion in the affected limb which may lead to increased difficulty performing normal activities.

Why treat Lymphedema?

Though lymphedema is not typically life-threatening, it may be uncomfortable or painful. Activities may become limited and limb size may increase. Affected areas are also more vulnerable to injury. When left untreated, a chronic inflammatory condition may result.

Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive condition; however it can be treated and controlled with an appropriate therapeutic program. While treatment can begin at any stage, early intervention helps eliminate further complications.

Lymphedema Therapy can involve:

  • Manual Lymphatic Treatment (gentle massage) to reroute and remove excess fluid
  • Exercise programs
  • Compression bandages or sleeves
  • Wound and skin care
  • Activity of Daily Living (ADL) adaptations
  • Education in self-management
  • Kinesiotaping: a taping technique used to improve circulation and decrease swelling
