Visual Perceptual Therapy

Clear and accurate vision is essential to most individual’s ability to function independently in their environment. Changes within the visual system can limit all aspects of an individual’s life; from the simplest activities of self care and home management to the most complex skills of driving and return to work. Some visual conditions cannot be treated adequately with just glasses, contact lenses and/or patching, and are best resolved through a program of Vision Perceptual Therapy.

Vision Perceptual Therapy is an individualized supervised treatment program designed to correct visual-motor or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies which have various causes, such as:

  • An aging visual system
  • Stroke
  • Brain injury, tumors, or trauma to the nervous system (i.e. birth injury, brain trauma, closed head trauma)
  • Stress
  • Inadequate sensorimotor development
  • Contributing hereditary factors (i.e. crossed-eyes, wandering eyes, eye turns)

Provided by an Occupational Therapist, Visual Perceptual Therapy utilizes a variety of treatment techniques to return an individual to the highest level of independence.

Vision Perceptual Therapy sessions include procedures designed to enhance the brain's ability to control eye alignment, eye movements, focusing abilities, and eye teamwork (binocular vision). Visual-motor skills and endurance are developed through the use of specialized computer and optical devices, including therapeutic lenses, prisms and filters. During the final stages of therapy, the patient's newly acquired visual skills are reinforced and made automatic through repetition and by integration with motor and cognitive skills.
