MR Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a non-invasive exam that visualizes the common bile duct, biliary tree and pancreatic duct. It is currently being used as a diagnostic alternative or as a preliminary step to an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), that involves the insertion of a flexible fiberoptic duodenoscope into the bile duct.
Eat nothing for 6 hours prior to your exam. Consumption of food results in the biliary system contracting and therefore, non-visualization of the system.
