What is a Registered Dietitian?

A registered dietitian (RD) is a highly trained food and nutrition expert who has met stringent academic and professional requirements, including:

• Earned a bachelor's degree with course work approved by ADA's Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education. Coursework typically includes food and nutrition sciences, foodservice systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and chemistry.
• Completed an accredited, supervised, six- to 12-month experiential practice program at a health care facility, community agency or foodservice corporation.
• Passed a national examiniation administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
• Completed continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.

Some RDs hold additional certifications in specilized areas of practice, such as pediatric or renal nutrition, nutrition support and diabetes education. Most registered dietitians work at hospitals and medical centers, private practice or other health care facilities. Many work in community and public settings, academia and research or in the food and nutrition industry.

The Elkhart General Hospital Registered Dietitians

The Elkhart General Hospital Registered Dietitians provide over 90 years combined expereince as dietitians in various disciplines throughout the hospital. The RDs represent a range of practice areas and interests including public health, sports nutrition, Medical Nutrition Therapy, diet counseling, diabetes, FSM, geriatric, oncology and critical care nutrition.

All EGH RDs are recognized and accredited by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the American Dietetic Association and certified by the state of Indiana.
