Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

In the spring of 2003, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) released new clinical guidelines for the prevention, detection, and treatment of high blood pressure. A national survey indicates that only 34% of hypertensive patients are being managed according to these guidelines.

Medicare now pays for 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring for diagnosis of ‘White Coat Syndrome’ if the following criteria are met:

  • Blood pressure taken in office greater than 140/90 on at least 3 separate office visits with 2 separate measurements made at each visit
  • Two documented separate blood pressure measurements taken outside the office that are less than 140/90
  • Documentation of no end organ damage.

The ambulatory blood pressure monitor utilized in the New Directions Wellness Clinics was selected for its accuracy, light weight and ease of client use.

When referring for Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring the referring physician receives:

  1. A summary report on blood pressures taken over a 24-hour period with averages and frequency of blood pressures above and below normal levels
  2. Interpretation of the study by Medical Director Wai Hung Lee, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.C.P.

For the 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring call (574) 523-2750. Total charge: $150
