Special Visiting Considerations

We understand the importance of family and friends to a patient's recovery.  Each visiting situation is different and will be handled on an individual basis based on the patient's condition and needs.

Family members working long days or untraditional hours will be accommodated.  Please check with the nurse.

PLEASE remain in your loved one's room while you visit.  This helps to protect the privacy, security and confidentiality of your loved one as well as the other patients in the Critical Care Center.

You may be asked to leave the room when the doctor or nurse is doing a procedure or exam or if your loved one's condition warrants limited visitors.

If you are asked to step out for a procedure - please wait in the visitor's waiting area.  This is to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the other patients.

The hospital reserves the right to ask a visitor to leave if it is in the best interest of the patient's health.  Exceptions to the visiting policy will be determined at the discretion of the health care team and will be based on the needs of the patient.  We appreciate your understanding if we ask you to adjust your visits.

CARDS, FLOWERS, GIFTS

Cards and notes are encouraged.  Flowers and live plants are discouraged because they have the potential of harboring bacteria or pollens which may cause a delay in the patient's healing proces and unfortunately there is little space to display the flowers or plants.

Gift balloons are allowed, provided they are mylar.  Latex balloons, which can cause allergic reactions, are not permitted in the Critical Care Center.

SMOKING POLICY...WE'RE SMOKE-FREE

Elkhart General continues to strive to better the quality of life for our patients, staff and visitors.  The hospital has implemented a no smoking policy to provide a safe and toxin free environment.  Smoking is prohibited in the Hospital or on hospital property.

Adjacent non-hospital property where smoking is permitted includes:

1. Arcade Boulevard and South Boulevard (McNaughton Park)
2. East Boulevard and South Boulevard (McNaughton Park)

(A shelter for smoking is available directly across from the Rehabilitation Services entrance.)

EMERGENCY DRILLS

Emergency drills occasionally are conducted by the hospital to test the various systems.  These drills may come to your attention because of ringing bells, flashing lights, or messages over the public address system.  In the event of a real emergency, you will receive instructions from the hospital staff.
