Nationally Recognized Excellence in Battling the Two Biggest Killers

Every year, heart disease and cancer rank Number One and Two, respectively, as the leading killers of Americans. In recent years, heart disease has annually claimed almost 700,000 lives at the national level, and cancer about 550,000. In Indiana, these two killers annually account for more than 50% of all deaths.

It makes great sense, then, for hospitals to continuously improve and expand their ability to care for heart and cancer patients. For decades, Elkhart General has done just that. Both programs have many “firsts” for Elkhart County to their credit, but being first isn’t what matters. What matters is being good at what you do.

For the third consecutive year, HealthGrades has ranked Elkhart General among the top hospitals in Indiana for overall cardiac services, including cardiac surgery. And in the Elkhart/South Bend area, Elkhart General is ranked Number One for cardiac interventions like angioplasty and stenting.

And Elkhart General’s Regional Center for Cancer Services is one of only 34 cancer programs in the entire country to earn the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award. Only 7% of the total programs surveyed by the Commission were selected for the Award.
