Anthun Barnes always wanted to be a police officer. But it was impossible because of his morbid obesity.
In recent years, he’d bulked up to a dangerous 378 pounds – a weight that made it difficult to even walk, let alone meet the demanding physical fitness requirements of the police force. But he wasn’t about to give up.
Like many who have reached a state of morbid obesity, where diet and exercise no longer work, he searched for another solution.
Today, Anthun is a firm 238 … 140 pounds trimmer and still dropping weight thanks to the Bariatric surgery he underwent. And weight isn’t all he’s lost. Severe back pain … sleep apnea … high blood pressure … borderline diabetes … they’re all gone.
Anthun has now passed all of the rigorous tests – academic as well as physical – required by the Police Academy. “There are lots of challenges when it comes to getting into the force,” states Anthun. “There was no way I was going to make it in my previous condition. Now I have a really good shot.”

Mary Hurst is literally half the woman she used to be. At the time her Bariatric surgery in April 2003, she was a size 32 and weighted 300 pounds. She wouldn’t get down on the floor to play with her grandchildren because she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to get up.
Now she’s a size 10 and weighs 145 pounds. She walks five miles a day and plays with her grandchildren all she wants.
“I used to take 26 pills in the morning and 26 at night, mostly to dealwith weight-related problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Now those problems have cleared up.” Mary reports that her surgery wentsmoothly and that she had no trouble adapting to a new diet andlifestyle.

When Joanne Roys said goodbye to 160 pounds, she said goodbye to others things as well. Like the type-2 diabetes and the sleep apnea that were part of her life when she weighed 390 pounds. Like bouts of severe depression triggered by a chemical imbalance, her size, or both. “I’m so much more comfortable with my body now,” she says. "I’d have the surgery again in a heartbeat!”
