Senior Elective Program

Elkhart General's Senior Elective Program offers third and fourth year medical students from the Indiana University School of Medicine an opportunity to spend one month studying a particular specialty under the direction of a physician.

20AN701 Anesthesia/Pain Management

Faculty: Gene Grove, MD
Units: 1 Full Time
Max. Students/Unit: 1
Available: All Year
Prerequisites: 3rd and 4th year status; 90% Clinical / 10% Lecture

The students will be exposed to a wide variety of pain management patients and anesthesia experiences. By the end of the month, the students will be able to:

  • Describe the patho-physiology of acute and chronic pain,
  • Manage acute pain,
  • Formulate a treatment plan for chronic pain,
  • Participate in the management of surgical anesthesia, and
  • Do pre- and post- surgical assessments.

The students will be exposed to: 1) surgical anesthesia 2) outpatient pain management patients; and 3) post-surgical pain management patients.

20MC701 Cardiology

Faculty: Thomas Nolan, MD

Prerequisites: 4th year status; 90% Clinical / 10% Lecture

The students will be exposed to a wide variety of cardiac pathology in the community setting. By the end of the month, the student will be able to:

  • Take a detailed cardiac history,
  • Perform an appropriate cardiovascular exam,
  • Create differential diagnoses for cardiovascular symptoms, and
  • Evaluate acute and chronic cardiac pathologies with such modalities as ECG, ECHO, stress testing, nuclear studies, cardiac catheterization, and PTCA.

The student will also get exposure to inpatient, outpatient, and intensive care settings.

20NR701 Clinical Neurosciences in the Community Setting

Faculty: Thomas Vidic, MD, Peter Carney, MD, Patrick Russell, MD, and Joseph Schnittker, MD

Prerequisites: 4th year status; Neurology clerkship must be completed; 90% Clinical / 10% Lecture

The student will be exposed to a broad range of neurologic and neurosurgical pathologies in the community setting. By the end of the month, the student will be able to:

  • Take a neurologic history,
  • Perform a complete neurologic examination,
  • Observe common neurosurgical procedures,
  • Order EEGs and EMGs, based on neurologic presentation,
  • Interpret EEGs, EMGs, CT, and MRI scans in neuro and neurosurgical disorders; and
  • Integrate the principles of neuroanatomy with neurologic disease and neurosurgical disease.

20MI711 Clinical Practice of Internal Medicine

Prerequisites: 4th year status; 75% Clinical / 20% Lecture / 5% Library

Objective

  • To gain further experience in the assessment and management of common and often complex problems in Internal Medicine practice
  • To increase clinical fund of knowledge regarding pathophysiology of cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic and infectious diseases
  • To become familiar with the logistics and responsibilities of primary care medicine.

Description

Experience both inpatient/outpatient internal medicine adult primary care in group practice setting. Private hospital in community of 40,000 to 50,000. Busy pace with full days beginning with morning rounds at hospital. Students will participate in history taking and physical exam of patients. Intense, but meaningful didactic sessions pertaining to patient care objectives and diagnostic skills. Housing is available if needed with in-hospital duties most weekends.

20MI721 Internal Medicine

Prerequisites: 4th year status; 90% Clinical / 10% Lecture

The student will be exposed to a wide variety of medical patients in a community setting. By the end of the month, the student will be able to:

  • Complete a general internal medicine history,
  • Perform a general internal medicine physical exam,
  • Evaluate a wide range of internal medicine symptoms,
  • Create appropriate differential diagnoses,
  • Incorporate preventative medicine into practice, and
  • Establish treatment plan for patients.

Student will be exposed to both inpatient and outpatient general internal medicine.

20PS701 Psychiatry

Faculty: David Taylor, MD, and Douglas Jarvis, MD
Units: 1 Full Time
Max. Students/Unit: 1
Available: All Year
Prerequisites: 3rd and 4th year status; 90% Clinical / 10% Lecture

This course will offer a wide variety of psychiatric experiences, including adolescent, adult, and geriatric. By the end of the month, the student will be able to:

  • Complete an appropriate mental status exam,
  • Describe the component of psychiatric evaluation,
  • Use the DMS-IV to make psychiatric diagnoses,
  • Evaluate patients from major psychiatric diagnoses of depression, psychosis, personality disorders, and anxiety disorders,
  • Have some exposure to adolescent and geriatric psychiatric disorders,
  • Review the major psychiatric treatment strategies of cognitive, supportive, and insight therapy,
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of psychopharmacology, and Observe and discuss electroconvulsive therapy (optional).

20LA701 Orthopedic Surgery

Faculty: Mark Klaassen, MD, Leonard Kibiloski, MD
Units: 1 Full Time
Max. Students/Unit: 1
Available: All Year
Prerequisites: 3rd and 4th year status; 90% Clinical / 10% Lecture
Location: Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center of Northern Indiana, Elkhart, Indiana

The orthopedic surgery rotation of Elkhart General will expose the student to a wide variety of acute and chronic orthopedic pathology and sports medicine. At the end of the month, the student will be able to:

  • Become proficient at joint examination,
  • Recognize compound orthopedic injuries,
  • Participate in the treatment of sports injuries,
  • Help manage inpatient orthopedic patients, including total joint replacement,and
  • Participate in casting a variety of fractures.

The student will be exposed to both inpatient and outpatient orthopedic patients.

20ZE701 Emergency Medicine

Faculty: Margaret Brummer, MD, David VanRyn, MD, Duane Miller, MD
Units: 1 Full Time
Max. Students/Unit: 1
Available: All Year
Prerequisites: 3rd and 4th year status with an interest in emergency medicine; 90% Clinical / 10% Lecture

This course is designed to provide on-site rotation with emergency trained physicians in a community-based hospital Emergency Department. A student can expect exposure to multiple patient volume, care of blunt and penetrating trauma, acute medical illness in adult and pediatric patients and industrial medicine. If the student is in the fourth year and has some experience, greater responsibility and freedom can occur. Housing is available.
