Hiring Tips

Our experienced Elkhart General Healthcare System team has put together some helpful interviewing and resume writing tips that will come in handy… whether you’re applying for school, an internship, a scholarship, or even a position in health care here at EGH!

Tips for Resume Writing

Resumes normally only get a 15 second glance at first viewing, so be sure yours looks professional, is concise, easy to read, and stands out.  Here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Make it original.  If you use a resume template, be sure to customize it with color, font, balance between text and white space, and design elements such as bolding or lines to highlight important content.
  2. Clearly state your career objective and ensure the information provided supports your career goal.  You will probably highlight different points when you are applying for a job than when you are applying for an internship.
  3. Provide a solid listing of your accomplishments, quantify accomplishments with numbers or amounts when possible, use strong action verbs, and place sections in the best order to highlight your strongest credentials.
  4. Proof your document.  Make sure there are no typos, spelling, grammar or syntax errors.
  5. When all is said and done, even a resume outlining years and years of experience should never be more than two pages.  If you have less experience behind you, it is best to keep it to one page.

Tips for Interviewing

The most important advice may be to prepare for your interview and to research the position and organization.  The interviewer will know and appreciate that you’ve done your homework!

  1. Prepare for the Interview!  Conduct additional research about the company or organization, research salary if applicable, find out who will be interviewing you, get directions to your interview site, and be sure to have several copies of your resume and reference list on hand.
  2. Be on time.  Better yet, arrive early to get a sense of the organization’s culture.
  3. Prepare and ask great questions.  Uncover as much information as possible about the position and ask questions about the organization.
  4. Listen carefully to the questions.  If necessary, ask for clarification before answering.  Provide examples in your answers when possible.
  5. Before concluding the interview, make sure all of your questions are answered and that you understand the next steps.  Always send your follow-up thank-you letters within 24 hours of the interview.

Questions Interviewers Often Ask

All interviewers have their own favorite questions to ask, but chances are that one or more of these questions will come up in your interview.  If you have answers prepared, you’ll demonstrate that you can be composed and professional under pressure and will be one step ahead of the interviewer!

  1. Tell me about yourself.  (Prepare for this one…it may be trickier than it sounds!)
  2. Why should we hire/choose you?
  3. What are your strengths/weaknesses?
  4. In the past, how have you demonstrated that you are a team player?
  5. Describe one of your most challenging/difficult assignments
