A mammogram is a safe, low dose x-ray of the breast and is currently the most effective method of detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages, when more treatment options would be available. Annual mammograms can detect breast cancer up to two years before a woman or her physician can feel an abnormality. Annual screening mammography is recommended for women ages 40 and over by the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI)
- The death rate due to breast cancer is reduced by >33% for women who undergo annual mammography
- 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of breast cancer and are not considered high risk.
- One in six breast cancers occur in women ages 40-49.
Additional information about mammography can be obtained at Mammography Saves Lives.
