Elkhart General to Live Tweet Partial Knee Replacement Surgery
Elkhart, IN—The Elkhart General Hospital Center for Joint Replacement will be the first in Northern Indiana to live tweet a partial knee replacement surgery on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The public is invited to follow along in the procedure, and may do so by following @elkhartgeneral or by using and following the #EGHsurgery hashtag on Twitter.
The goal of live tweeting the surgery is to educate patients about what happens during a partial knee replacement surgery, and to alleviate any concerns they may have. The tweets will provide a detailed sequence of what happens during the procedure, from the preparation stages to draping, making the incision, replacing the knee and the closing of the surgical site. The patient’s safety is the No. 1 priority during the surgery, and the surgeon has the discretion to stop the Twittercast if necessary.
Patient safety is at the center of care at Elkhart General Hospital. In 2012, HealthGrades awarded Elkhart General Hospital the Patient Safety Excellence Award, indicating that Elkhart General’s patient safety ratings are in the top 5% of U.S. hospitals. Elkhart General also received a Five-Star rating for Joint Replacement and Total Knee Replacement for five years in a row (2009-2013).
