Guide to the EGH Heart and Critical Care Center

Welcome to the Elkhart General Hospital Heart and Critical Care Center, where specially trained physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians provide 24-hour intensive care for individuals who are critically ill, injured or have undergone extensive surgeries, including open heart surgery.

Having a family member in the Critical Care Center is stressful. We understand your concerns and want to do what we can to ease your burden.  The guidelines outlined are designed to allow us to care for your loved one in the best possible way. Please take a few minutes to read the following so you have a better understanding of what to expect and learn how you can be part of the healing process.

PLEASE understand that when your loved one arrives in the Critical Care Center, the team needs time to assess the patient, start treatment, and set up equipment. This can take up to an hour. We realize how hard it is to wait. A staff member will come out or call out to the waiting room and bring you back as soon as possible.

Highly skilled nurses staff the 24-bed Critical Care Center. Specialized services are provided in a caring environment for you. Patient conditions are monitored closely through the use of state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

The Critical Care staff collaborates closely with other departments to provide optimum care. When the physician determines that intensive care is no longer needed, your loved one will be transferred to another unit. There trained, registered nurses will continue to monitor his/her progress.

Visiting Hours

Visiting hours for the Heart and Critical Care Center are from 6 a.m.  - 8:30 p.m. We request that there be no visitation between the hours of 7 a.m. - 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. so the staff can exchange information to ensure continuity of care as they hand off the care of patients to the oncoming shift.

Condition Reports

We recognize your loved one as an extension of your total family unit and what affects one person will affect the entire family. In an effort to keep the whole family informed and to eliminate confusion, we ask that there be one contact person identified to keep close contact with the nurse and physician. This spokesperson will then be responsible for informing the rest of the family of the patient's condition.

An information CODE will be given to the family on admission. Due to Federal regulations and patient privacy laws, Elkhart General staff can give only limited patient information over the phone. Information will only be given out over the phone when the caller gives the information code.

If your loved one elects to be listed as an "Admission Opt Out" no information is given over the phone. Anyone calling for the patient and/or family will be told that we have no information. Flowers, cards, etc will be returned to sender.

Please remember that numerous telephone calls take time away from patient care.
