Education and Program Committee Mission Statement
The mission of the Education and Program Committee is to identify, develop, present and evaluate medical educational programs of relevance for the Medical Staff of Elkhart General Hospital. Programming needs will be identified by perceived needs of the Medical Staff; by quality assurance activities of the Hospital and Medical Staff; by new technological advances offered in medicine and surgery; and by community, state and national public health data. Programs will be offered to visiting medical and nursing personnel, to medical students on rotation at the Hospital, and the general community at large.
The Education and Program Committee endeavors, within its available resources, to encourage ongoing learning by the Medical, Nursing, and Ancillary Staff. This will be accomplished by ongoing medical education programming offered to its staff members. These programs will disseminate medical information, whether clinical, sociological, economical, or political, as it affects the practice of medicine in Elkhart County.
It also will help facilitate self-directed learning by maintaining a current medical library, providing access to medical information available on the Internet, and the commitment to adapt to the advances available in the rapidly changing era of computer assisted access to information and education programming.
The Education and Program Committee is charged with overseeing the educational activities of the Hospital Medical Staff to maintain compliance with the Standards of the American Council for Continuing Medical Education. As such, the Committee assists the Medical Staff Departments and Committees in planning and programming to meet their specific educational needs. Programs include general medical staff educational meetings, specific department and committee educational meetings and special adhoc educational meetings offered to the Medical, Nursing, and Ancillary Staff, and where appropriate to the community at large.
The Board of Directors, in conjunction with the Administration of the Hospital, supports the educational effort by providing direct financial support; providing librarian staff support, fulfilling the literature and computer needs of the Medical, Nursing, and Ancillary Staff; secretarial staff support sufficient to support programming and maintenance of records; audio-visual equipment to support educational programming; and the provision of adequate classrooms, lecture hall, and library to assist in the educational efforts of the Committee.
